Gioteck TX70: Get ahead of the game.

Every time a gift-giving opportunity rolls around, my wife and I go through the same routine. She asks what I’d like for the occasion and I tell her I’m fine and don’t need anything. Then the day comes and I get some new socks or a dressing gown. For the most recent occasion, I was going to tell her that I needed a new headset for work meetings (and maybe a little gaming with the kids), because our darling son keeps taking my wired headset to use on his Nintendo Switch to game with his friends. He’s apparently incapable of charging his own wireless headset and if we don’t charge it for him an emergency usually arises whereby he’s in the middle of playing online with his friends and he urgently needs to borrow my work headset.

So it was a little disappointing for my wife Alena when I contacted the good people at Gioteck regarding one of their controllers and they offered to let me test out their top of the range TX70 wireless headset, designed for wireless use with either a PC or a PS4, or wired use with Nintendo Switch or Xbox, and with a whopping 15 hr battery life.

It was great news for me though as I’m a big fan of Gioteck’s controllers, usually because of the quality you get for a fraction of the price of branded versions. So when the headset arrived a few days later I was very excited about opening it up.

Gioteck TX70 in original boxMy first impressions upon unboxing the Gioteck TX70 were that this felt like it had been built to a high standard for the £49.99 price tag. The mesh cushions on the ear pieces were spongy and felt extremely comfortable on my ears, while the bridge (if that’s the right word) that sits over my head wasn’t too tight. There was also padding on this bridge so that it felt snug on the crown of my head. For me this comfort is important as I spend long hours analysing recordings at work or attending Zoom meetings, and the headsets I’m provided by my employer get uncomfortable after a while.

The Gioteck TX70 however is primarily designed for gamers, and while I’m not the world’s biggest gamer (I play an hour or so with the kids) I can appreciate how a comfortable headset makes all the difference for long gaming sessions, just as it does for my work. To test how good the TX70 was for longer sessions I used them for a two hour Zoom meeting the day after I received them and was really impressed with the comfort, the quality of the sound and also with the microphone, which tucks neatly into the left earpiece.

One issue I did find was that the TX70 uses a USB to receive the wireless signals and that this obviously requires a USB slot. This won’t be an issue for anyone with plenty of USB ports on their computer, and to be fair most TX70 users are going to be using them for gaming so it won’t be an issue at all. For my work computer though, with its measly two USB ports it did mean I used them all up once I had my mouse plugged in. That said I could quite easily have used the jack socket (provided) for the TX70 if I’d needed the other USB port.

The great thing about using the TX70 wirelessly though was that I didn’t have to carry my laptop with me to make a drink during the meeting (come on, we’ve all done it), and I could simply carry on listening while making a coffee.

But what about the sound quality of the TX70? Zoom meetings are perfect for testing the comfort of a headset, but it’s when gaming or watching a movie that you really get to experience how good the sound quality is.

Since I don’t have a PS4 and don’t use my PC for gaming I hooked the TX70 up to my son’s Nintendo Switch and played a couple of games to test out the audio capabilities, and again I was really impressed. Those comfortable cushions that cover your ears also make a great job of cancelling out any surrounding noise, enabling you to immerse yourself completely in the game. The sound quality was incredibly crisp and I noticed aspects of the game’s audio that I’d never noticed while playing through the television. I compared this to our son’s own budget headset and the difference in quality was immediately noticeable.

Impressed, I then tried the TX70 with a movie (Saving Private Ryan) using the jack socket to attach it to my tablet. Again the quality of the sound was crystal clear and some of the explosions were mind-blowing once I’d enabled the bass boost. I ought really have told my wife Alena what I was doing by the way, as it turned out she’d been calling my name for ten minutes and thought I was being rude for not answering.

And speaking of my wife Alena, she wasn’t happy with Gioteck because she had no idea what to get me once more. But then again, you can never have enough socks.

The Gioteck TX70 can be bought from Argos and other major retailers for £49.99
