Mighty Minis Win Northern Hockey Championship
The King’s Junior School under-11 hockey team has produced the best result in the school’s long hockey history, by winning the North of England ‘In2’ Hockey Championships.
The mighty minis won courtesy of a nail-biting penalty shoot-out, in which popular goalkeeper Katie Barr undid King’s traditional nemesis Kirkham Grammar with a string of scintillating saves.
King’s stars Izzy Moores and Holly Burke then kept their cool to slot home their spot shots and the celebrations could begin.
The team is captained by pivotal playmaker Lottie Dennett, but she gave credit to her team mates: “We are all in it together; win or lose we are a team.”
King’s U11 girls qualified by beating Hill House from Leeds in West Yorkshire in the North-West championships thanks to a clinical strike from the lethal Sophie Miller. Other keys players were the uncompromising defenders Sophie Scott and Holly Burke with demon striker Scarlett Brough and supersonic sub Harriet Bailey.
King’s Hockey Coach Sarah Hopkin, who usually works with the senior pupils, paid tribute to the junior team’s enduring qualities: “Individuals win games, but teams win championships and this is a great team. I am very excited about the prospect of next season when the girls will be in our Senior Girls’ Division.”
