MGS Pupil Myles Meets His Match with Nick
Nine year old Manchester Grammar School pupil, Myles Maguire, played the match of his life when he came head to head with squash superstar, Nick Matthew, this month.
Myles, who lives in Northenden and trains at The Northern Squash Club in Didsbury, joined world number three Nick on the court in a squash exhibition match. Nick has enjoyed a successful career to date as both three times World and British champion, and has won three Commonwealth Games gold medals.
In a thrilling match, Nick eventually beat Myles 11-6, but not after a serious challenge. This experience was the icing on the cake for Myles who had earlier in the same week finished fifth in the Lancashire County Championships for his age group. Myles regularly trains with the older students at MGS, often participating in The Northern’s special training sessions for pupils at the School. He already trains with the North West England Under-11 squad.
Myles said: “This was such an exciting opportunity for me, not only to meet a real squash champion but also play against him.”
MGS Master of Squash, John Shoard, said: “Although only nine years old, Myles is already showing a real talent for the sport and I’m sure that he will continue to develop his skills as he grows stronger.”
