King’s solution: Trip on the Home Front
King’s Year 6 pupils packed up their troubles in their old kit bags when their scheduled living history trip to Stockport’s Air Raid Shelter was cancelled due to Covid restrictions. King’s Year 6 teacher Miss Soulla Costanda simply decided to have the trip on the home front with the children and staff dressing up as evacuees, Home Guard volunteers and nurses, for a very special mufti day.
Miss Costanda said: “The end of year trip to the Stockport Air Raid shelter is an annual treat for our final year pupils, who are always left spellbound by the sacrifices of their great grandparents’ generation. As it was cancelled at the last minute, I thought it was a shame to waste their costumes and suggested they came to school dressed as evacuees, name tags and all!”
“In class, we all worked in groups to produce posters on specific topics including: The Home Guard, Women’s roles, VE Day and The Battle of Britain. In Music lessons, they learned ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ and even that chart topper ‘Run-Rabbit-Run’ too.
“The children are fascinated by World War Two and the project has also covered ‘The Blitz’, the war leaders, rationing and the life of ‘Anne Frank’.”
