Greenbank Prep: Eco-Schools Green Flag Award
In a remarkable achievement, Greenbank Preparatory School was honoured with the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction in July 2023. This international recognition underscores the outstanding efforts of both children and staff in transforming Greenbank into a more environmentally conscious school while fostering eco-awareness within the school community.
The journey towards this distinction began with children collaborating closely with the school’s Eco-Coordinator, Mrs. Laura Bradbury. Together, they conducted a comprehensive environmental audit, assessing various aspects such as recycling practices, energy consumption, biodiversity on the school’s premises, and the integration of environmental themes within the classroom. Building upon their findings, the proactive Eco Council, comprising children, parents, and staff, devised a year-long plan to enhance the school’s eco-friendly credentials.
Throughout the year, children engaged in national campaigns such as Oceans of Plastic Awareness Day, and World Earth Day, contributing to their green initiatives. In October the whole school were challenged to walk, bike or scoot to school one day a week, not only focusing on reducing air pollution but also encouraging healthy living.
One of the Eco-Council members expressed their enthusiasm for achieving the award, highlighting the significant reduction in the school’s electricity consumption due to the installation of LED lighting and the whole school being aware of how to save energy. They also acknowledged the value of the school’s Eco Garden, serving as both a relaxing oasis and a source of produce for the school kitchen, along with being a canvas for artwork crafted from recycled plastics.
Adam Flint, the Eco-Schools England Manager, emphasized the dedication and passion required to earn an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award. He praised the children for their remarkable achievement, stating that they should be immensely proud of their efforts.
Greenbank Preparatory School’s commitment to environmental sustainability and education serves as an inspiring example for schools, showcasing the positive impact that can be achieved through collaborative efforts towards a greener future.
