The magical world of Julia and Axel

From the middle of summer through to the first day of New Year 2024, The Lowry’s Creative Space is running an exhibition dedicated to children’s books written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The partnership between this duo has brought us some of the world’s best-loved (and best-selling!) children’s books, including The Gruffalo, Zog, Room on the Broom, The Smeds and the Smoos, and most recently, The Baddies.

Julia and Axel Exhibition, The Lowry Welcome to the magic! Would you rather be the protagonist of a book or its author? Both definitely have their pleasures! At this exhibition, children can really feel like characters in Julia and Axel’s books; can wear costumes and masks, run freely through the halls of the Creative Space, growl, squeak, scream, and make faces in the mirrors. They can also try their skills as creators of their own stories, twisting fantastic worms from chenille wire, or making their own magic spells in the form of rhyming puzzles, or giving an advice to their favourite characters…

In every hall, interesting tasks and creative experiment are waiting for young visitors and their parents. And, of course, kids’ favourite books are waiting for them at every step! You can read or just leaf through them, take pictures with them in beautiful photo zones, and for those who haven’t learned to read yet, there are screens broadcasting the brightest moments of the stories.

Family visiting exhibition at The LowryThere’s plenty for adults to enjoy as well, as they can get up close and personal to the inner workings of writing and illustrating books: from notebooks and sketches to the final stages of creation. No matter what age you are, you’ll revel in a stunning universe in which people and animals, dragons, monsters and funny insects live side by side, and where kindness and friendship always triumph.

To round off the visit, a walk through a world of magical illustrations will take you through to rooms filled with the paintings of Lawrence Stephen Lowry, and gently bring you back to the reality of the city of Manchester.

Entry to the exhibition is free, but take care to reserve your free tickets in advance on The Lowry’s website.
