Origin Hybrid Pro: Award Winning Premium Mattress at an Affordable Price
If your kids are anything like mine, then they’ll spend a lot of time in their bed. Not just sleeping, but playing games, reading and just generally relaxing. Don’t get me wrong, mine don’t live sedentary lifestyles – if anything their lives are a whirlwind of gymnastics, dance classes, football training, tennis class and endless play with their friends. But until recently I’d never really put much thought into them having a really comfy mattress to relax on when they are winding down, reading or gaming. They both have really nice beds, that they love, but I hadn’t – to my lasting shame – thought much about the mattress to go with their beds. To me, a mattress was a mattress when it comes to kids.
Our nine-year-old daughter, Ella, has always slept through the night without any issue. If anything, getting her up on a morning has been the bigger problem. But our 12-year-old son, Harrison, tends to get up at 4-5am regularly and often comes into our room when he can’t get back to sleep.
I just put this down to Harrison being Harrison and (frankly) just like me, who has never really slept well for as long as I can remember. But then something occurred to me this summer, Harrison never seems to wake up at these awkward times when we’re on holiday and staying in a decent hotel.
It was only when we started re-decorating a spare room in our house and decided to turn it into a bedroom that I started putting two and two together. My wife, Alena, who is far more discerning than I am when it comes to buying anything, wanted a good thick hotel style mattress on the new bed in the room. I – being the unobservant type if it’s something I have no real interest in – hadn’t even noticed that hotel mattresses tended to be thick. Like I say, a mattress was a mattress to me.
But once tasked by Alena with finding such a mattress I did what I do best and researched, researched, researched. And as I did, I started to think more and more about whether this could be why Harrison wasn’t sleeping through the night.
I came across the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress as it had been voted Best Hybrid Mattress 2024 by Good Housekeeping Institute and Best Mattress for aches and pains by GQ Magazine, as well as being recommended by the Orthopaedic Advisory Council. I also noticed that a friend of mine had reviewed the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress on her blog and also given it a glowing review. I reached out to her and asked what she really thought (off the record) and she insisted that she was delighted with the mattress and that it had really helped with her back ache. So, I started to look a little deeper and found that the brand had gained a superb reputation not just for its focus on comfort, support, and innovative design but also for its ultra-competitive pricing the mid-range to premium market, making it one of the best value mattresses on the market as well as the most comfortable.
A couple of weeks later I watched as two heavy set gentlemen carried what looked like a really heavy box from their van down our drive. They very kindly brought it all the way into our spare room, which fortunately for them is downstairs, and left me to unbox it. I should probably have done this with Alena’s help, such was the weight of the king size mattress. But I was eager to get it on our new bed, so I huffed and puffed and managed to get it from the box. I then used a carpet knife to open the plastic that was keeping the mattress rolled up and was almost thrown off balance into our new wardrobes by it uncoiling. Naively, I had not expected this at all. After a brief struggle, I managed to wrestle the enormous object onto our new ottoman, and I was finally able to push the bed down into place. NOTE: after assembling our new ottoman I thought the gas levers were broken as it wouldn’t push down. But I was assured by the manufacturer that once a mattress was on top it would… and it did.
My immediate impressions of the mattress were “wow”. The 31cm profile of the Origin mattress looked so thick and comfortable, and yes, just like a hotel mattress did. I then laid on the mattress and the difference between this and our own memory foam mattress felt like going from cotton to silk. As the “Hybrid Pro” name suggests, Origin use a hybrid design that blends memory foam, latex, and over 5,700 titanium springs; so, it just felt incredibly comfortable to lie on.
The mattress only comes in medium-firm format but from what I have read this makes the Origin Hybrid Pro suitable for a variety of sleeping positions. Side sleepers benefit from the pressure relief on shoulders and hips, while back and stomach sleepers enjoy the supportive firmness that helps keep the spine aligned. There’s also a Q&A on Origin’s FAQ section that explains a little more about whether the Hybrid Pro is soft or firm, and I’ll quote exactly what they say here: “Trick question – it’s both! The HexaGrid Plus is divided into 3 thirds. The flat midsection is firmer to offer your back extra support to keep it strong and healthy; and the ends are softer to offer soothing comfort to the legs and shoulder. Furthermore, the layer is made of with a patent-pending, uniquely adaptable blend. It conforms to your body, knowing where to apply soft comfort and where to provide firmer support. Making Origin Mattresses feel different, and your sleep better.”
So, the big question is, did the Origin Hybrid Pro make us sleep better? The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that we’ve only had the Hybrid a week and that Alena and I have slept on it through the week, and we’ve let Harrison use it over the weekend. My verdict is that it’s the best mattress I’ve slept on while at home, but in all honesty I would have to admit that I’ve never owned a high quality mattress before. Alena’s verdict is that I should have listened to her years ago and spent more money on a mattress. Apparently, she’s asked me many times before; but she’s finally happy now and in turn I’m obviously happy too.
As for Harrison, he’s definitely slept better on the Origin Hybrid Pro than his own mattress, which means I’m now going to have to fork out for another one. In the meantime, we’re all going to be squabbling about who gets to sleep in the spare room, so maybe I’ll have to buy two.
I’m now confident that investing in one for Harrison’s bed is a good idea. Sleep is vital for children’s overall health and development. It supports physical growth, as growth hormones are primarily released during deep sleep. Adequate rest also enhances cognitive function, improving memory, attention, and learning, which are crucial for academic performance. Studies show that without sufficient sleep, children are more likely to experience behavioural problems, difficulty concentrating, and decreased energy levels. They’re also more likely to get ill as sleep is crucial for the body’s immune system. And if I do invest in one for his bed and he hates it, which I highly doubt, Origin offer a whopping 200 day trial return policy, as long as the mattress isn’t damaged in the 200 days.
For full specifications about the cooling effects of Origin’s SmartClimatePro system, the pressure relieving HexaGrid Plus foam, motion isolation, breathable materials and 200 day trial it’s best to refer you to Origin’s website, where you’ll also find reviews and recommendations from customers, magazines and orthopaedic specialists.
