Flying Pixie Scores 9 / 10

When it comes to our six year old daughter Ella it’s easy to pick the perfect gift for her – anything with unicorns or fairies is guaranteed to light her little eyes up. I’ve no idea why this is, because she doesn’t watch them on TV or movies. But as far as toys are concerned, they’re the be-all and end-all.

So when we were scouring the Argos catalogue, trying to work out what she wanted for her birthday, we invariably ended up settling – time and time again – on the Hatchimals Pixies Crystal Flyer.

Every time she saw the picture in the catalogue – of the pixie flying above a little girl’s hand – she became more and more determined to have one.

Personally I didn’t want to get one and neither did my wife, who hates flying toys – as does our Jack Russell terrier – but no matter how many times we told her it probably wouldn’t be very good in real life she still wanted it for her birthday.

So on the big day we were all set to see her full of smiles when she opened it, and then full of disappointment when she actually flew it.

Which just goes to show that grown-ups don’t always know best after all.
The first part of my premonition was spot on, she danced and punched the air screaming “yes” and “thank you mummy and daddy” when she unwrapped it and saw the box, and her little hands were actually trembling as she took it from its egg. Then of course came the disappointing part – she had to wait for it to charge!

Happy girl with flying pixieOnce it was fully powered up though, we gathered around for the maiden flight; and I thought, this is the part when her dreams will be shattered.

And then the rotor blades began to whir and Ella let go of the legs and the pixie was up in the air, dancing around our living room above Ella’s hand – and only occasionally spinning out of control and crashing into various objects in the room.

But it’s remarkably sturdy, and we’ve had the Pixie more than a month now and she’s probably logged more flying hours than the average Ryanair pilot – and yet she’s still going strong.
And so is Ella’s belief that fairies might be real after all.

Ella’s rating 9/10 – she loves every minute of it, but as with all flying toys the charge doesn’t last very long.

My rating 9/10 – I felt it was a little expensive as we’ve had flying toys that cost much less. But it was worth the money for her big day.
