The past year has tuned many of us in to our introspective sides, and turned us into questioners – from the practical ‘will I finally be able to pack my kids off to school tomorrow’ variety to the really big ‘what on earth is it all about anyway’ kind. In his new book ‘Am I Loved’, former divorce lawyer John D Bieber turns his attention to the titular question, possibly the most asked of all time. He takes the reader on a journey of discovery, beginning with the paradox of humanity functioning through “emotions that it cannot remotely understand or control”, and leading towards an understanding of the ways in which we have all been getting it wrong for many thousands of years, and how we are meant to live.
Not quite a novel, not quite a self-help manual – this unusual book straddles a fine line, cutting across genres and styles. The author weaves in a mix of philosophy and psychology, and blends them with his own professional experiences of relationships (with all their successes, failures and complications); the result is a volume which is reminiscent of a poetry anthology in style, and whose substance traverses the most fundamental issues of humanity, nature, morality and faith.
The scope of the book is incredibly broad, but at its heart this is an exploration of love, of what it means to be human, and of how we can do better at it. No particular mindset, belief system or worldview is needed to tune in to the author’s way of thinking, and to try looking outwards (and inwards) from a novel perspective.
