Making Memories
What are your favourite memories from when you were a child? What did you like to do and where did you like to go? These experiences we have as children stay with us for a lifetime. We all love to reminisce about our childhood and recall those feelings and emotions. We can create those memories for our children too, so that when they are grown up they can say with a smile and a laugh; “do you remember when” and it will be even better when we are a part of that memory.
With our increasingly busy and fast paced lives it can be hard to fit in and organize quality time with family and friends. Parents find it increasingly difficult spend time with their children as they juggle work, meal times, after school activities and running the home. When we are able to spend time with our kids we are often exhausted both mentally and physically so coming up with inspiration for things to do can often be a challenge.
Our children are able to show us the world from a different perspective and we can learn from them to be present in the moment and enjoy right now. Playing games, colouring, dancing, taking a walk outdoors gives us the opportunity to let our minds run free to imagine the unimaginable. We can be creative and silly as well having time to learn and develop as we teach them. Having our full attention in that quality time is extremely rewarding and means so much to them. It builds their confidence and self esteem and helps them to know that they are loved and are important.
As well as trying new things children also love the familiar so why not bring back some family traditions. If you are new family you can start your own and let the children help you to decide what they can be. You also make a point of celebrating achievements, special events and milestones in their lives. Family and friends are a wonderful privilege, let’s be “guilty” of spending too much time with them instead of not enough.
We have technology at our fingertips with every action a photo opportunity and while it is wonderful to be able to capture those moments it is also good to put our phones down and take in the experience. When we do this we are able to absorb so much more. We are able to remember what it smells like, feels like and if we’re eating something yummy, what that tastes like. These all help to create that memory and help it form in our minds so that when we look back at our photograph we can recall all of that information. A great way to capture this is to make a scrap book to fill with photos, things you have made or collected together and write down some words or funny things that happened.
