Wood Street Mission is Waiting for Toys from Didsbury.
Established in 1869, Wood Street Mission has been helping families living in difficult conditions for more than 150 years. The charity, which was born in the slums of Victorian Manchester, remembers the days of soup kitchens and shelters for neglected boys. Nowadays it helps low income families with everyday basics, school essentials and books. But no matter the times, the Christmas Appeal tradition has travelled through centuries.
This year, as always, Wood Street Mission is collecting gifts to give to struggling families across Manchester and Salford for Christmas. Especially this year, which is already likely to be remembered as the year of Covid, it’s in our power to also recall it as the year of Kindness.
If you would like to help with this appeal and you live in Didsbury, there is a new kid on the block collecting gifts for the charity. The Kip McGrath centre will be accepting gifts for the Wood Street Mission Christmas Appeal until Thursday, 10th December from 09:00-15:00 Monday-Friday at 192a Burton Road, Didsbury, M20 1LH.
Arash Sedighi, who runs the new Kip McGrath Didsbury, explains: “Our centre isn’t open for lessons yet and still shows the sign from the previous occupiers, “Paint” nail salon, but you can find us between Gurkha Grill and Mercado – look for the Wood Street Mission poster in the window. Wood Street Mission is looking particularly for new gift donations for children 0-14 years of age. The Wood Street van will come and pick the toys up from us regularly, and we will be driving toys there on the day they arrive.”
Please check out Wood Street’s website for ideas on what you can donate.
