Editor’s Word of the Season: Expectation
There is a very particular feeling that arrives along with the first days of spring. It can best be described as expectation. One definition of expectation is: ‘a strong belief that something will happen’. There a few strong beliefs that I begin to hold around this time – I’m convinced that the weather will soon take a turn for the warmer, that I’ll suddenly take to gardening in the lighter evenings, and that I’ll have the perfect summer holiday booked by mid-April. Or maybe I’m just full of expectation after reading all about the unexpected beaches of Holland.
Of course, there is more than one way to ‘be expecting’. Take yourself off on a father-to-be’s entertaining journey into the unknown and decide if you wouldn’t also like to pamper yourself with a VIP package. Or, if you’re feeling brave, have your expectations of the dangers of play-fighting, and the benefits of boredom, challenged by our thought provoking articles.
Expectation can be a double-edged sword. Any individual expectation we hold carries with it the rather nasty possibility that it won’t be met. But, even if the weather remains stubbornly wintry, the garden permanently untended, and my summer holiday booking hectically last-minute – there are some of our expectations that spring always meets. So, here’s to longer, lighter days, and another entertaining issue of M&D Magazine!
