International childhood cancer experts join forces in Manchester

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, and children’s cancer clinicians and scientists from across the globe are joining forces in Manchester today to brainstorm potential new research that could help to change the outcomes for children with cancer.

This special event, hosted by the children’s cancer research charity, Friends of Rosie, will help spark new international collaborations and inspire new research ideas to help children diagnosed with a type of rare and complex childhood cancer, called neuroblastoma, which most often affects children under five.

Says Felicity Goodey, Chair of Friends of Rosie, “Research is the only way to ensure that children with cancer survive and indeed thrive. Collaboration across countries, institutions, and charities is key to making that a reality. That’s why we are bringing together experts from more than 30 different research institutions and hospital trusts from around Europe and North America. Over the next two days they will share research and exchange ideas to accelerate the development of more effective and less toxic treatments for children with neuroblastoma”.

Add Felicity, “We’re also delighted today to be joined by three other children’s cancer charities, Joseph’s Smile, Neuroblastoma UK, and Solving Kids Cancer. All four charities, including Friends of Rosie, were borne out of the loss of children with neuroblastoma and the desperate desire that no other family should experience what they have.

“Sadly, we see new charities being formed all the time as more families are impacted by childhood cancer. Over recent years, we’ve been collaborating with many other like-minded charities so we can together fund more vital childhood cancer research.

“We want Friends of Rosie to be a place where other charities and groups who want to fund children’s cancer research can come together in partnership. Together, our efforts will be far more sustainable and far-reaching.”
