Frightening Family Fun
Halloween is meant to be a freaky festival – but for a lot of parents the fear of being unable to keep their kids entertained can seem a lot more terrifying than ghosts or witches! There’s not much we can do about the undead creatures, but we here at M&D have got your other fear covered. Read on for spectacularly spooky ways to keep your family amused in and around Manchester this Halloween.
If you fancy a day out that’s perfect for the whole family, why not head over to Red House Farm, from 10am to 4pm on any day from Saturday 24th October to Sunday 1st November. Hunt spooks all around the farm, go on a barrel train ride or pay a little extra to try your hand at pumpkin carving (you can take the finished product home and display it with pride to scare away unwanted visitors)! Why not go dressed up and try your luck in the free fancy dress competition? Entry is £7.95 for children, with under 2s and accompanying adults going free. Perfect for all those wanting a more mellow Halloween treat!
If, on the other hand, you’d like something a little more ghostly, then Wythenshawe Hall on Sunday 25th October at 12pm is the place to be. Join the friends of the hall for terrifying tales with Wythy Witch, and meet the White Lady as she tells of her fate in the Civil War. Admission is 50p and includes the chance to take part in traditional games such as pass the pumpkin and apple bobbing.
For the competitive among you, why not complete a spooktacular quiz and maybe even win a prize in the family Halloween Hunt running daily from Tuesday 27th October to Sunday 1st November at the Salford Museum and Art Gallery. It costs £1 to participate – the event runs between 10am and 4.45pm on weekdays and 12pm and 4pm on weekends. If you have a more creative turn of mind then try to make a paper cup witch or wizard at the same venue? This event is only running on Wednesday 28th October, with sessions at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm at a cost of £1.50 per child.
Continuing on the creative theme, why not go pumpkin carving with Snoopy at the Trafford Centre’s Pumpkin Patch Design Studio? Halloween costumes optional but highly recommended! Come along from 11am until 4pm on Friday 30th October and brave Snoopy’s free trick or treat trail to win some scarily good prizes! Also at the Trafford Centre, pop over to Legoland for a bit of “brick or treating” any time between now and 1st November. Build Lego Jack’o Lanterns, go on a haunted Miniland hunt or help theme the ghost train carriages every day from 10am to 7pm. As an extra Halloween treat any child arriving in costume on the day (31st October) can get in free provided they bring along an adult. Otherwise tickets cost £9.95 on all other days.
Feeling athletic? Then head to Chill Factore at the Trafford Quays Leisure Village any time from right now to Halloween night. Passes start at £15 each when booking two and there’s all sorts of freaky fun to be had! Enjoy spotting ghoulish characters as you race on Sledge’O Mania, and prepare for a few frights at Mini Moose’s Haunted House (where adults can sneak in free until 23rd October).
So with plenty to keep the whole family occupied, other Halloween activities coud be found on our October events page. We here at M&D wish you a fiendishly fun and frightening Halloween!
