Becky’s Bookworms – Love Books, Read Books, Win Books

Where do you buy books for your kids? Bedtime reads, Christmas presents, sticker and activity books, colourful encyclopaedias and entertaining non-fiction, books about growing up and books for babies – these all sound wonderful, but where to access such a diverse range with ease?
We know just the place, where a huge selection is available for children of all ages from babies to teens, and where helpful advice and fun events can be found side by side with great reads! It is run by a teacher and business woman from Stockport.

Q:   What were your reasons for starting this business?
A:   My name is Rebecca and I run Becky’s Bookworms as an independent Usborne organiser. I started my journey with Usborne in June 2020 and I was inspired to do this by following a few other Usborne organisers online and seeing the benefits children were getting from the books and resources available.
There were also many other factors which prompted this decision, including the ability to access and purchase the resources for the children in my own family, to have flexibility, to start my own small business, to keep myself busy during the difficult times the world is facing and to earn a bit of extra cash! So far this is working wonderfully.

Q:   What are your particular strengths as an Usborne organiser?
A:   I love reading and I believe in the importance of literacy for children’s education and imagination. I have a background in early years teaching and have been in this field of work and study for 19 years now. I wanted to invest in some of the books and other resources for the children I teach and I believe I can advise my customers on what may be right for their children.

Q:   For many busy parents technology provides a big help in educating and entertaining their children. How would you persuade them that reading is still an important and necessary part of a child’s development?
A:   Reading with young children has been proven to help stimulate and develop children’s cognitive skills; it allows children to make sense of the world around them. Reading encourages language and literacy skills and can contribute to helping children’s development in other areas such as confidence, self-esteem, vocabulary growth, anxiety and stress reduction. It also helps to establish good sleep patterns.

A girl reading Usborne's bookQ:   What do you think is the most important thing reading gives to children?
A:   Huge thing for me is children’s imagination. When teaching early years children, it is always so clear to see that imagination plays a huge part in their learning and development. It is instrumental in helping children to be able to achieve their next steps, and the role of adults is very important. Einstein famously said: “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand”.

Reading just one book a day can take a child’s imagination to a whole new level. And from there, when imagination and curiosity are provoked, children embark on so many more voyages of discovery to explore new areas of knowledge and opportunities to learn. This journey is just like a love of books – unstoppable and beautiful.
