Top 5 tips for cleaning & protecting your natural wood floor this winter

Floors are put through their paces during the Winter – and with wet, muddy shoes or paws coming through the doors, it can soon turn surfaces into an unsightly mess!

A clean home is a beautiful home, but remember, it’s not just about keeping floors clean and healthy, but ensuring surfaces are well protected too.

For over one hundred years, Bona has been perfecting the art of caring for hardwood floors. In fact, our cleaning products are trusted to protect and care for some of the most prestigious floors in the world – from treasured palaces to museums, arenas and national galleries worldwide – so you can rest reassure that we bring a wealth of expertise to our home cleaning system.

Tips on cleaning and protecting hardwood floors

Cleaning the house with Bona premium spray mopHere are our top tips to boost your floor cleaning and protection regime this winter – quick, easy and effective ways to reveal your floor’s natural shine:

1.   Dust daily
When you have lots of people in and out of the house or kids running around to and from the garden, dust and debris will collect on your floor surface. We recommend as a first step dusting your floors daily with a microfibre mop or cloth to help prevent scratches and surface damage which can occur when these particles are trodden on and spread across the floors.
 2.   Pick the best cleaning solution
Ensure you choose a quality solution that won’t degrade the condition of the floor. Our suggestion is to select a high quality, low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound – carbon-based materials which evaporate into the air we breathe at room temperature), water-based cleaning solution that won’t leave a residue or streaks across your floors.
Also, avoid DIY cleaning product combinations such as bleach and lemon juice, or water and vinegar which can damage the surface and strip the lacquer on a wood floor.
3.   Ditch the mop and bucket
Using a traditional mop and bucket makes it difficult not to over-saturate your floor. This excess moisture can penetrate the wood boards or blocks, and over time can cause damage to the wood planks and make them warp and move.
4.   Floor protection
A large percentage of dirt entering a home is brought in by foot, so it’s important to ensure a quality protective mat, of the right size, is in place at the front and back door to catch the dirt from outside and protect your floor from daily wear and tear.
Adhesive felt pads are also a great solution to protect your hardwood floor from damage – add them to the feet of furniture to avoid scratches and scuffs.
5.   Make the mop count
Choose mops with extra-large microfibre mop heads for faster cleaning. A microfibre dusting pad uses electrostatic action to pick up and lock away dirt, dust, hair, micro-particles, and other household allergens from your floors’ surface.
Remember to avoid lifting your microfibre mop up from the floor when you clean – this way you keep the dirt trapped on the pad, so it doesn’t scratch the surface.
