The Elmer Adventure comes to The Lowry

Elmer doesn’t look exactly like other elephants – because Elmer is patchwork!

This October, multi Olivier Award-nominated family theatre company Tall Stories (which also delighted audiences across the country with The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, and The Smeds and The Smoos) will celebrate Elmer’s 35th anniversary year with a world premiere performance at The Lowry, perfect for everyone aged three and up.

Elmer was created by David McKee and first published by Andersen Press in 1989. Elmer has since gone on to sell over 10 million copies in over 60 languages. Now, everyone is invited to join three friends – masterfully played by Amelia Gabriel, Frankie Turton and Jack Benjamin – as they embark on an enticing search for Elmer in this joyful stage adaptation. Audiences will be transported to the heart of a magical jungle, ideal for a patchwork elephant to hide in, as they join the adventurers in their search for Elmer. Told using Tall Stories’ exciting blend of storytelling theatre, catchy music and lots of laughs, this celebration of friendship, empathy and cooperation captures the essence of the original books, in which Elmer realises that it is his differences that make him who he truly is and are what his friends love about him.

Elmer at the rehearsalThe Elmer Adventure is helmed by Tall Stories’ Artistic Director Toby Mitchell, who co-founded the company in 1997, and brought to life by an experienced crew and cast. Puppetry Director and Designer Yvonne Stone has leveraged her experience of working on the National Theatre’s Warhorse to bring a giant elephant, operated by two performers, to the stage. The enchanting world of Elmer has been playfully enhanced by Matthew Floyd Jones’s music and lyrics, while his bold and colourful jungle habitat is deftly brought to life by Set and Costume Designer Amanda Mascarenhas and illuminated by Lighting Designer Rajiv Pattani. Movement Director Sundeep Saini brings to life the illusion of a herd of elephants and other jungle animals on stage.

The Elmer Adventure will premiere at The Lowry, Salford from 22nd – 26th October. To buy your tickets click here. In the meantime, why not introduce some extra Elmer-inspired fun for your little ones by completing our themed activities or solving the interactive crossword puzzle?
